The winners of the 2020 iF Design Award have been selected from January 21st to 23rd in Hamburg, Germany. This year, a total of 7,298 entries from 56 countries were in the competition, with 75 entries being honored with the iF Gold Award!

Description: This is a low-key product aimed at the low-end segment of the sports earphone market. Therefore, the designer’s task was to add interesting elements to the packaging and use the language of the younger generation to appeal to them, with emojis coming to mind. The earphones and controller can also be seen as the eyes and mouth of emoji icons. The packaging transforms into various emojis with different expressions.

Description: The theme of this design is benevolence. In Chinese culture, “good people love the mountains, as they are steady, tolerant, and kind like the mountains, unshaken by the outside world.” Using the style of traditional Chinese ink wash painting to depict landscapes, the packaging is scattered and grand, reflecting the artistic conception of Chinese landscapes and the meaning of “benevolence.” The front of the bottle is very simple, while the ink style on the side of the mountain presents a complex simplicity contrast, making the product distinctive and conveying a sense of high value.

Description: The name of this Chinese Baijiu product is “He Gan,” which translates to “Whatever happens outside, it has nothing to do with me.” In the Chinese context, the meaning is very abstract. On one hand, it sounds rude and indifferent. On the other hand, it can be interpreted as “No matter what happens outside, it will not affect my thoughts.” In this case, the idea behind the product name reflects the ability to think independently.

Description: The name of this beer product, “Lovibond 55,” is inspired by Joseph Williams Lovibond, the inventor of the colorimeter, with “55” indicating the coloration the beer has achieved. To better display the brand owner’s respect for Mr. Lovibond, the bottleneck design features 16 curved surfaces, which allude to the 16-notch metal wheel that inspired Mr. Lovibond’s invention of the colorimeter. Additionally, against the backdrop of “55,” the entire process from wheat harvest to beer brewing is graphically represented, while “Lovibond” is displayed at the front to highlight the brand’s expertise and uniqueness.

Description: The packaging includes five bottles and labels for each item. Rarely on the international market do wineries have a mission to “promote the traditional culture of the region.” The elements used in the packaging are closely related to nature and the culture of the area. Each element is a beautiful symbol of Chinese culture. The inspiration for the packaging comes from the mounting method of traditional Chinese painting, known as the “scroll.” The “hidden” illustration revealed upon opening the bottle will become a piece of art, fully in line with the essence of Chinese culture. This product is a special gift that can serve as a carrier of culture.

Description: “Rebala” means “beautiful” in the language of the Tujia, a Chinese ethnic minority. We have integrated scenes from local love songs between men and women into the Chinese character symbol “Rebala.” Furthermore, we highlight the high-quality mineral water by showcasing the primitive folk customs and water source landscapes. The design appears simple from the front, but rich details can be seen when viewed through the refraction of the water from the back. The cap is inspired by the headscarves worn by local girls. The skirt-like corrugated bottle makes the water appear clearer. The illustration on the outer packaging is derived from the visual elements of “Rebala.”

Description: The design presents various characteristics and connotations of the egg yolk, making it fun, vivid, and even dramatic. Then, there are images depicting the interactions between the four elements of the egg yolk, giant panda, monkey, dragon, and lion, inspired by the facial changes of Chinese opera characters during performances. Is the “red dot” on the egg yolk a crispy nose or something else? This image leaves space for connection and unique memories at its center. It is evident that Xuanma is a brand focused on the craft of egg yolk cakes.

Description: Jeokdang (red sugar, red in color and sweet in taste) is a brand that primarily sells Yang-gaeng, a product made from red beans. The logo visualizes the romantic fantasy derived from the visual and taste transformation of red desserts. The graphic patterns used in each packaging depict the sequence of making red bean jelly. They mark the phased work, such as turning beans into bean paste, mixing red beans with agar, heating the ingredients, and solidifying the material in the mold.

Description: Extracting elements from the Nanshan Artisan Brand logo, a symbolic graphic is formed and 12 illustrations of the Chinese zodiac are created. This packaging is designed based on these elements, including 2, 6, and 12-bottle different annual Lunar New Year wine series.

The packaging contains 2 wine glasses with silver zodiac buttons for consumer use. The unique pivot design allows it to serve as a wine glass during drinking, typically adorned with the zodiac decorations, which can enhance the emotional connection between the user and the Brand. All materials selected for the packaging are eco-friendly, and a recycling packaging system has been designed.

Like fine wine, it is eternal and precious.

Description: The new brand image showcases high quality, minimalism, aesthetics, and environmental protection. We have elevated the brand image to “a gentle Chinese spirit with a sense of beauty.” We employ “minimalism” to construct an extreme “clarity” of style. Drawing on the essence of refined Qing dynasty porcelain, we have designed bottles with smooth curves. We enable these products to communicate with customers, as all these advantages can be directly recognized within the 10 seconds when they view the packaging. Moreover, Chinese liquor is one of the symbols of China. Eastern aesthetics can also be further exhibited and elevated on a global scale through the Chinese spirit system.

Description: The key selling point of this Chinese Baijiu is the exceptional quality of the water used in its brewing. The theme of the product is “Xijin Qianhua,” which is another highlight, suggesting the ability to wash away the splendid appearance and maintain nature. To illustrate the ancient Eastern philosophy behind this theme, the packaging we designed features a large label resembling water droplets on the box, abstract patterns on the bottle, and a small fish “swimming” around the bottleneck, creating an Eastern aesthetic. Additionally, the product is sold in a four-bottle pack, each with a different design style, to provide a better shopping experience for consumers.

Description: Smart Time is a snack brand under COFCO, and to enhance the brand image, it plans to develop a high-end product line - PREMIUM. In the core regions for global raw material selection, only high-grade large fruits and rare varieties are chosen for the finished products. We advocate for the environmental protection concept of this project from the perspectives of the world, nature, human care, the relationships between these layers, and the visual imagery that adorns them. Animals filled with plants, flowers, and a clever combination of products offer a unique visual insight, enhancing the recognition and brand memorability of this packaging.

Description: We have avoided all unnecessary decorative elements and chosen a curved surface design to express a softer, more minimalist shape. The surface coating technique is very close to the feel of human skin, thus providing a more comfortable grip. The most important design feature is the decorative ring in the middle of the bottle, which is a core element that greatly differentiates it from similar products. To contrast with the bottle’s tactile feel, we insisted on choosing “metal” as the material for the ring, and we hope to assemble the two ends on the opposite sides of the ring together after fitting, to better correspond with the LOGO form.

Description: The design combines free abstract brushstrokes with a unique calligraphy font. The abstract brushstrokes hold multiple meanings, such as Eastern calligraphy strokes, Western oil painting strokes, the climax of wine surges, and a state of free wielding. The bottle opening is designed to be wider for ease of pouring. Additionally, its cork stopper enhances the appearance and the quality of the wine.

Description: The word “Liàng” encapsulates the Guangfu culture, expressing praise for exquisite things in Cantonese. The elements in the packaging represent the most awkward characteristics of each region in Guangdong. Considering the softness of the crispy biscuits, this simple outer packaging box structure combines tourism culture and crispy biscuit culture to create a gift. The inner box packaging features a square structure that can be unfolded into a flower shape, which can capture food crumbs and effectively prevent food contamination. The packaging structure is glue-free, meeting environmental protection requirements.

Description: This brand adopts a black packaging aesthetic, subverting traditional understandings of paper packaging design. Considering the origin of the product, it uses paper sculptures of the Rhinopithecus Bieti and Neophocaena Asiaeorientalis Asiaeorientalis as artworks to call people to protect endangered animals.

Description: “Liangjiu” preserves the traditional brewing craftsmanship of Maotai-flavored liquor but breaks away from traditional shape definitions. Its fusion contemporary and minimalist aesthetics, using black glass for the bottle to ensure effective light protection. Moreover, the production costs have been well-controlled. The design is ergonomic, aiding in grip. The bottle’s design is based on the owner’s multiple writings of the word “Liang.” It pays homage to culture, symbolizing the pursuit of Chinese craftsmanship.

Description: Wuchang rice is natural and organic. Designing packaging that conveys these selling points and simultaneously presents these unique value propositions through storytelling is not easy, as it’s not easily visualized! By using anthropomorphized animal characters and a hand-drawn style, we selected five animals as the core of this creation to achieve more scenes and story designs, allowing consumers to ponder the story behind the growth of Wuchang rice through the images. Rice cultivated under natural care is naturally healthier and more organic.

Description: The packaging design for “Chaozhou’s Three Treasures” employs hand-carved woodblock printing for the main elements and typography. It boasts a unique texture and handcrafted details. This design complements the ancient Chaozhou’s Three Treasures, highlighting their natural, simple, and culturally rich essence. Through the packaging, consumers can gain insight into the local culture. Compared to similar products, the packaging graphics are hand-carved onto woodblocks and displayed on the packaging, giving consumers a sense of the warmth and human touch that comes with handcrafted items.

Description: This is a set of care products, including “Hair Nutrition, Shampoo, and Body Wash.” The client needed to emphasize the sequence of product use. We abandoned unnecessary decorations and aimed to make the design language as simple and pure as possible. By combining “1, 2, 0” with ripples, we can clearly communicate the usage scenario and sequence of the products to consumers, while also subtly suggesting the brand’s concept of safety and skin-friendliness.

Description: The new generation of home-use boxed water: saving 80% of plastic usage and 100% biodegradable. Drawing inspiration from the new Chinese culture, the packaging design for the “Luzhuoquan” (English: Deer Drinking Spring Water) brand symbolizes a creative concept. The simple division of white and blue (Brand color: Maldives Blue) creates an ethereal atmosphere for “Deer Drinking Spring,” embodying the healthy and vibrant spirit of the brand.

Wooden Frame Structure: Mortise and tenon, the soul of ancient Chinese architecture, furniture, and other equipment, characterized by not using nails on the object. It utilizes the concave and convex parts of the objects to secure their connection.

Description: The design concept reflects the culture and local customs of late Qing merchants. The line drawing techniques and tea formulas that circulated in the late Qing period will be used to seal the bottom of brick tea. We use three traditional Chinese colors on different packaging. The final realization of the packaging will use handmade Xuan paper as the material, and the inscriptions will be embossed using woodblock printing, all of which are done by hand. This packaging process promotes the inheritance of China’s intangible cultural heritage. The pigments used for embossing, the glue for bonding, and the straw rope for tying will all be made from natural materials.

Description: This is a commemorative wine marking the 100th anniversary of the CP Group. In China, traditional auspicious patterns have a strong driving force in the consumer market. Therefore, we use red to represent their media industry, with patterns of peonies and bats, which are auspicious in China; green represents their agriculture, with patterns of sika deer and persimmons, which are considered lucky in China; blue represents their manufacturing industry, with patterns of pine trees and cranes, which symbolize resilience in China; and gold represents their finance industry, with patterns of plum blossoms and happiness, which signify joy in China.

Description: Jinshan Lian is a rare traditional Chinese herb. It is said that when injured or sick birds need treatment, healthy birds will search for Litopenaeus vannamei to feed them. This is a good wild self-treatment medicine. The Weike Plant Factory uses photovoltaic technology to cultivate artificial Arabidopsis thaliana. In an enclosed ultra-clean space, a 3D plant system is employed. This creates a new method of cultivating Luo Han Guo (a type of melon) to preserve the rare Chinese herbs. As an exquisite gift, we intend to design it in a way that sets it apart from other similar products. It appears understated but contains a hint of luxury in its decoration.

Description: This is a simple yellow wine based on rice wine, with its finely ribbed surface processing inspired by the intricate ribs on ancient wine bottles. This gives the bottle a simple yet rich overall feel. Description: The design of the bottle shape is inspired by the shapes of the artifacts from the Sanxingdui site in China. The bottle is of medium size and easy to handle. The upper part of the bottle can be used as a cup, and the overall design can be used as a cultural artifact decoration. The design is very practical, functional, and decorative. The inner box is decorated with crinkled fabric. The bottle is wrapped in clay material. The built-in shovel and brush inside the product box can be used for excavation. Customers can use the built-in tools when opening the lid to excavate. The design aims to enhance the interactive effect between the product and the customer.

Description: This idea stems from the unique Mid-Autumn Festival custom of the Chinese people - the Moon. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, people gather with their families to eat mooncakes and watch the bright moon in the sky. According to this custom, the image people see is “the moon rising from the lake and shimmering,” which is incorporated into the design to evoke emotional resonance.

Bottle Design: The design features the moonlight reflected on the lake’s surface, with the bottle cap representing the bright moon.

Box Design: A set of ten interlocking plates, showcasing Chinese wooden craftsmanship and embodying exceptional Eastern skill.

Description: This is a series of nutritional supplements from the porcelain capital of Jiangxi Province, China. The packaging uses a paper box cutting method to achieve the contours of the bottle. The whiteness of celadon complements the Brand’s pure natural formula. From an environmental perspective, the packaging box is not printed, only product information is pasted. Blue and white porcelain represents the pinnacle of Chinese porcelain, combined with the packaging design to interpret the depth of Chinese culture. With an Eastern cultural background, it brings the product closer to consumers.

Description: This is a Baijiu product from Heilongjiang Province, China. The most memorable aspect of this place is the magnificent scenery after the snowfall each winter. Therefore, in the packaging design, we use white and blue colors to remind consumers of the association of these colors with winter and coldness. On the blue glass bottle, the brand name is engraved in the “Running Water Wave,” giving the impression that the liquor is flowing over ice crystals. The brand name is also stamped on the outer packaging box, and a hand-drawn local landscape is painted on it. This way, the brand can impress consumers from all angles.

Description: This product is a collection of traditional Chinese medicine and the spirit of Chinese culture. Regarding the design, we have extracted the shape of the gourd and were inspired by ancient Chinese medicine cabinets. Since ancient times, the gourd has been a container for the mythical and miraculous cures of China. The idea of the bottle’s knob is also extracted from ancient Chinese medicine cabinets. The product intuitively showcases authentic Chinese culture and brings hope for a healthy life to customers.

Description: Tea has a history of over 3000 years in China, known for its mild nature and various beneficial effects on human health. Additionally, interactive packaging is very suitable for young people to accept small items on their desks and gives the packaging a second life. Pulp molding packaging also complements tea well, providing ample vitality to allow the tea to undergo secondary fermentation in the restricted, closed environment.

Description: The design inspiration for Huangdi Neijing comes from the concept of “Yin and Yang, the way of heaven and earth.” The solid circle represents Yang, symbolizing the sky, while the dotted circle represents Yin, symbolizing the earth, reflecting the philosophy of the Huangdi Neijing Brand. White is the dominant color throughout the design, embodying the Eastern aesthetic style of the product.

Description: This distilled spirit product from China is named “Tian Yi Kong,” which translates to “sky and solitude.” In Chinese writing, the difference between “Tian he Kong” (meaning sky) and “Tian Yi Kong” is just the addition of the word “and,” but in terms of meaning, the former carries a more romantic connotation. The container is designed to have an asymmetrical streamlined appearance and multiple reverse indentations at the bottom, resembling undulating hills. A semi-transparent image of a whale appears on the container and above the “hills.” The entire design presents a magical scene, as if a large fish is soaring in the air.
